Learn to draw the human form from direct observation
Life drawing is said to be both the foundation of and the highest expression of artistic talent. It's a unique challenge combining the complexities of human anatomy, and the experience of four dimensions: Height, width, depth and time. (Photos only contain the first two!)
In this class you'll gain an understanding of the rhythms and patterns of the nude human body, with a flexibility to accommodate subtle shifts that happen during the pose. You'll also learn how to show form and depth through shading, as well as techniques for accurate proportion.
What Materials Do I Need?
All materials are included in workshop fees! So just show up and enjoy.
We'll be using vine charcoal, hard, medium, and white charcoal pencils, kneaded erasers, and toned papers.
Make a Plan
The first portion of the workshop will teach you how to lay out a design and proportional plan for your drawing. You'll practice through a series of short poses, incrementally adding concepts and improving with each sketch.
Create Organic Contours
No sausage people here! The principles you learn in this portion of the workshop focus on concepts related to human anatomy, which will naturally lead you to creating meaningful and elegant contour lines on your drawing while simultaneously improving proportion.
Use Shading to Define Form
If you want dimension in your drawings, you have to understand light logic. Identifying the direction of your light source, the correct value relationships, and using correct mark directions all build depth and create realism.
