Learn a 3 Step Process for Creating Portraits with Depth
Sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start. You'll learn how to see the whole head abstractly in order to build a dimensional foundation on which you can build the likeness.
Using charcoal on toned paper allows you to work sculpturally, making changes as you go along. This method is both forgiving and freeing, as you progress from abstraction to realism.
Articulate the Form throughĀ Shading in Black and White Charcoal
Light logic tells us how to use value to describe which surfaces are facing toward and away from the light, and this is the foundation of realism and depth. In this workshop, you'll learn this as well as how to use mark directions and advanced techniques to describe the surface of the face.
Observe Live Models to Move Beyond Flat Photographs
Only usingĀ photo referencesĀ is limiting. The decisions of how to translate three dimensions into two have already been made, and camera lenses see very differently thanĀ our eyes do.
This is why people are often shocked at the realism of artwork, but not photos.
Lacey will lead you through exercises that help you become aware of your own unique vision so that you can express it on paper.
